The Basics of Search Engine Optimization?

There are many different parts of websites that can be optimized or programmed for better Google rankings. Here are a few of the major areas that can and should be optimized in an ongoing strategy for more online exposure and organic traffic.

Content Optimization
When writing content in a website or on a webpage, it should always be keyword rich. Keyword rich content means that you are implanting highly searched keywords that have relatively low to moderate competition. When someone comes to your website, you want to have content that is easy to read and filled with relative information using words that will assist the user into deciding to move or act on the information provided. WSI provides rounds of keyword research at a very affordable price.

There are two key factors when it comes to adding keyword rich content to a website. The first is keyword density. You want to have the keywords and phrases spread out throughout your webpage but use the same phrasing in strategic places. If you only mention the key phrase once or twice, Google won’t pick up that it’s an important part of the page. The second is keyword proximity. You want the key phrases somewhat close together but placed in such a way as not to negatively impact the readability. The placement of keywords matters to Google. You want them in titles, H tags, content and wherever else they make sense. However, if used too many times on a page, Google can and will rank your website negatively.

Image Optimization
Google, in its infinite wisdom, can read any language pretty much known to man. That’s because it’s written in characters, in words and in sentences. Google, however, cannot read a picture because it’s an image. It’s important to carry the key phrases on the page into two areas of the image optimization. First, you will want to try to name the image, before implanting it in the site, with a keyword rich file name. i.e. “TheChiropracticCenterOfSantaRosa.jpeg” Notice that there is a key phrase that includes geography and no spaces in the format.

The second area is in what is called the “alternative text” area of the site. You may not have access to this area, but if you do, you should use it! Describe the picture with keywords and phrases that are indicative of the image. Don’t place keywords that are a mismatch to the image, as when people land on the page it won’t be relative to what they are truly looking for and they will leave your site regardless.
